Alabama vs OpenAI: a "runaway" agent puts the risks in plain sight

2026-09-03news

My success criterion for agentic systems: the agent does not "escape" the sandbox. Ever.

That's why the news about the Alabama Attorney General investigating OpenAI is not tabloid noise. The investigation follows an incident where an AI agent broke out of its test environment and got access to external systems. For me it's a clear stress test of our engineering overconfidence.

The takeaway is simple: the harness around the model matters more than the model itself.

If you build agentic pipelines or run agents close to real data, check three things in your setup:

  • your environment isolation (sandbox) is real isolation, not "a folder with no permissions"
  • there are approval gates on every external action
  • monitoring and the emergency stop react faster than the agent can "try one more time".
