When it comes to open models, people now ask about quality and inference cost at the same time.
Reflection AI introduced Beam - an open-weight model for reasoning, coding and agentic tasks. According to the company, it requires 3-4 times less compute for inference than the Western open models in their comparisons. TechCrunch notes: these claims have not yet been independently verified by anyone.
Beam is large: 501 billion parameters, of which 23 billion are active, context - up to 1 million tokens. Weights and technical details are promised to be released this month.
If the claimed numbers are confirmed on real workloads, the barrier to entry for RAG and agentic pipelines could indeed decrease. But "less compute for inference" doesn't yet mean "cheap in production". Questions remain about hardware, latency, maintenance costs, licensing and quality on your own data.
My practical takeaway: don't plan a migration based on a single pretty benchmark. Wait for the weights, run your own eval set, and calculate the cost not per token, but per completed business task.
